Bertoia Chairs

Harry Bertoia was an eminent Italian-born artist and modern furniture designer. He learned the art of making handmade jewelry from Cass Technical High School, Detroit. He also owes his credentials to the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts which is now called the College for Creative Studies. In 1937, he got a scholarship to study at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where he met some very creative people, such as Walter Gropius, Edmund N. Bacon and Ray and Charles Eames. In 1939, Harry Bertoia opened his own metal workshop where he taught jewelry design and metal work.

Harry Bertoia moved to Pennsylvania in 1950 and opened a studio with Hans and Florence Knoll. Here, he designed five wire pieces which was called the Bertoia Collection for Knoll. Among all the designs the one that brought him immense fame was the Wire Diamond Chair. It was sculpted from a molded lattice work of welded steel. When he designed these chairs he said, “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them." The light grid-work is the essence of Bertoia chairs. Bertoia chairs are classic mid-20th century-furniture icons due to their modish and comfy design.
